Our History

In 1914, a Washington, D.C. attorney James E. Padgett learned that he had the gift of automatic writing. At first he was incredulous that through this gift he could receive communications from his departed wife, Helen. But it soon became apparent that Helen was writing him details of their life together that only the two of them could know. His happiness in knowing Helen was alive and often with him, inspired him to allow others who transitioned from mortal to spirit to also write. Soon he was convinced that a great spirit world exists where our friends and loved ones have opportunities to progress above the earth plane into the higher spheres of love and light where happiness exists beyond mortal conception.

Through Mr. Padgett’s grandmother, Ann Rollins, Helen learned of the Celestial Heavens – the Divine Kingdom of God that Jesus had come to earth to disclose, and where he was now Master and Prince of Peace. Ann Rollins had progressed to this Kingdom and was helping Helen to pray for the receiving of God’s Divine Love and, thereby, undergo the soul transformation that would fit her to inhabit these Celestial Spheres.

The enthusiasm of Ann and Helen for the Father’s wonderful provision brought Jesus to Mr. Padgett for the purpose of convincing him of Divine Love’s reality and transforming power.

Soon, Jesus was communicating with Mr. Padgett and urging him to pray earnestly for the inflowing of the Divine Love into his soul. Jesus explained that the Love would elevate Mr. Padgett’s soul and mind so that he and his Celestial co-workers could form a rapport with Mr. Padgett and deliver through him the highest religious Truths available to mankind.

The revelations which James Padgett began to receive were later designated by Jesus as his “Second Coming” to earth. He was bringing to light, once again, the New Covenant of the Heart between God and man. This was the good news of the availablity of God’s Divine Essence to human souls, as foretold by the Old Testament prophets. The Heavenly Father, through the Gift of His Divine Love, was offering His children a foundation for living that would not only cleanse their souls of sin and error but also transform their souls. Little by little, the possessors of the Love would be acquiring God’s Nature, thus assuring them of immortal life in the Celestial Heavens.

From 1914 until 1923, the year of his passing to the spirit world, Mr. Padgett received over 2500 messages. Many of these answer questions about contradictions in the Bible for those who may have been confused. Much of the revealed information combines the common sense of natural law with the goodness of love that fulfills the higher, spiritual laws.

Close friends of Mr. Padgett worked with him for the remainder of his life to transcribe the messages. One of these, Dr. Leslie R. Stone, was the first to have them published in book form, in 1940. Another close associate, Eugene Morgan, worked with the spirits inhabiting the lower earth planes so that they might receive the Love and Light of the Divine Essence into their souls. Before their passing, both gentlemen helped thousands of spirits leave the lower planes and find homes in the Celestial Heavens.

In 1954, Dr. Stone was joined by Dr. Daniel G. Samuels and Rev. John Paul Gibson. The three worked on preserving the original writings received by James Padgett, while important new messages from Jesus were being delivered through Dr. Samuels (who had been chosen by Jesus as his second mortal instrument).

In 1955, under the leadership of Jesus, the Dr. Leslie Stone Foundation was established in Washington, D.C. to serve as the repository of the original messages and the organization through which the Truths of Divine Love were to be disseminated to humanity. The Foundation was to have borne the name of James E. Padgett, but, because living relatives might have objected, his name could not be used.

The year 1958 saw the incorporation of a non-profit church – the Foundation Church of the New Birth – that was to assume the role of the Dr. Leslie R. Stone Foundation. Again, under the guidance of Jesus, Dr. Stone, Dr. Samuels and Rev. Gibson worked diligently to help establish the true religion on earth, described by Jesus as follows:

“I and all of us spirits in the Celestial Heavens are anxious that such a church come into being, with leaders and members who are imbued with the entire conception of the Father’s Divine Love for His children and how the souls of His children may become divine in the soul sense: through prayer to Him for the coming of His Love; and that through His Love may come healing power beyond what one has been able to accomplish and that the members and elders of this church understand in their minds and know in their hearts that salvation of the soul and healing of the flesh, through the Father’s Loving-Kindness, may be granted to mankind; and that they open up their souls to the Father’s Love in all earnestness of prayer in their souls. Then will the church be a success as a manifestation of God’s Love and Mercy on earth, and the members and elders be blessed in abundance.”

The church was to embody Jesus’ true teaching when on earth as the Messiah of God. He emphasized that salvation is a matter between each individual and God. Each person can, through sincere prayer, receive God’s redeeming Love into their soul. At-onement with the Heavenly Father and transformation, little by little, into His Divine Nature. Responsibility for one’s salvation, therefore, rests with each individual and cannot be bestowed arbitrarily by a church decree or through the supposed “sacrifice” by God of one of His creatures.

The church was to seek to reach mankind with the Truth of the Divine Love through its publications, combined with journalistic activities, talks and lectures, as well as radio broadcasts. Through Dr. Samuels, Jesus pointed out that a specific place, or congregation seated in one place of worship, was not necessary. This was because in our modern world the concept of a church of the air, or one developed through journalistic activity, such as a magazine, already existed. Its membership, then, would be scattered throughout the world, and served through the mailing out of the church’s publications.

Based on Jesus’ guidelines, Drs. Stone and Samuels and Rev. Gibson dedicated themselves over the next 25 years to the success of the church. After the passing of the founding member of the church, there was difficulty in finding people who would take up leadership roles. In 1983 the church was dissolved.

In December 1985, in their earnest desire to carry on the invaluable work accomplished by the Church of the New Birth, several ministers of the old Foundation Church of New Birth church incorporated the Foundation Church of Divine Truth. Thus, through prayer for the Father’s Divine Love and the guidance of Jesus, revelation of the Divine Love Truths continues to be received through mediums whose soul development qualifies them to receive spiritual truth.

Our Purpose for Existing

With so many churches in the world, why do we need another church? Apostle John answers this question in a message to James Padgett on October 19, 1916.

I am here, John.

I was with you tonight and heard the preacher answer the questions, and some of his answers were very satisfactory, but there was one that did not exactly satisfy the longings of the man who is in search of truth – I mean the one that asked what should one do who is not satisfied with any of the churches.

Well, if he can find no church that provides truths that satisfy his inquiring soul, then he can never feel that he should go to any church for information as to those things which he has no knowledge of or which he has grave doubts about.

The churches, of course, can give no information on truths that they themselves do not know. And if the truths that these churches teach fall short of what the man is seeking, then they cannot possibly satisfy him. While the churches differ in their creed and government, and perhaps in some interpretation of the Bible, the orthodox churches are all founded on the teachings of the Bible, and cannot teach greater or other truths than that Book contains. Hence, if a person is seeking for truths that are not in the Bible, their inquiries cannot be answered by those whose knowledge is confined to the Bible teachings. The non-orthodox churches cannot provide the truths of the spiritual kingdom of God for they to a large degree reject the Bible and depend on ethical and moral doctrines, and mere conscience in determining the right and wrong of things. Spiritual things are not known by these churches, and, hence the inquiring mind cannot get from them the information or help that it is calling for.

I know that in such a condition and want of knowledge of truth on the part of the churches, such a man is without the privilege of having his cravings for the truth and spiritual things satisfied. As a consequence, he must seek further to get the necessary information, and in seeking, he will find no place where such knowledge may be found.

The mere intellectual acquirements of students and philosophers will not supply what the man is seeking and he is left without any possibility of finding. And so the preacher’s suggestion that he and two others form a church of their own, would validity were it not for the fact that any church so formed would have no greater possession of the truth than the churches that he has failed to find satisfaction in.

There are many on earth today in the condition of the man spoken of, and many who refuse to seek truth in the churches are without recourse to other means, places or teachers of whom they can learn what they are searching for.

The spirits have known of this human condition for many centuries and been trying to supply a way or create a medium through which the great spiritual truths of God could be made known. And for that very purpose we are now using you to receive our messages of truth and make them known to mankind, and provide a church, where the seeking person may find answers to their inquiries.

We shall complete our delivery of these truths through you and then the person who cannot find a church where their searchings can be satisfied, will find a reservoir of truth opened to them, that will not require any preacher or church to explain it.

As you proceed in your experience with the churches and teachers of the old truths, as they call them, you will more fully realize the necessity for our work and your work. I will not write more tonight, but will come soon and deliver a formal message.

With my love and blessings I will say good night.

John.
